Trends in the Marine Engine Field

The major trend in my field is going "green".  Alternative fuels such as LNG and RNG are becoming less experimental and more the new norm.  For years at B.C. Ferries we ran large diesel engines that were very rugged and dependable, but had next to no components on the engine or after the engine (exhaust scrubbers) to reduce Nox emissions.   The majority of our fleet now mainly runs on LNG and now with the new minor vessels we are running Hybrid battery power.  The engines are also equipped with a DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fuel) injector that injects DEF into the exhaust system to further reduce emissions.  This change has happened at a rapid pace to fight climate change.  This has created a need for a lot of additional training and special equipment to maintain these engines.
